Blog #4: Agile Assessment and Exam Management
Most times, static assessments amidst high-pressure schedules often stresses out students and teachers alike. By breaking it down into multiple assessments schools are already looking for a method to this and reduce stresses on the system.
The dreaded 🙂 assessments will be our focus
Agile, extends that approach by virtue of its principles. It provides alternatives by building on top of formative assessments. Inculcate ongoing feedback, quick iterations to improve makes Exams and assessments not a big load, but even enjoyable and inclusive.
In the last blog on Agile Planning and Delivery, we covered how ‘learning sprints’ over short periods, fine-tuned with feedback enabled an engaging lesson delivery. Thinking in Agile enables inculcating assessments into the plans, and breaking it down into smaller, manageable demos of learning gained. Done creatively, it also makes it fun for both the tutor and the tutored.
Now, what are ways in which these assessments can be made better with Agile? For one, frequent reviews (with peers at times), daily reflections and quizzes would ease the burden of assessments. If there are project assignments – checkpoints would be a good way to go to define course and also to course correct – quick short meetings and to the point feedback is all that is needed.
To ease the anxiety of exams that students often fall into, a ‘low-stakes’ quizzing would be ideal, say, for a language learning check. Also, having students reflect on the topic of study and peer feedback empowers them.
A much involved deep-dive into the exam management could be, to run it customized to students that are ready, and shift a bit for those that need time. It provides insights on gaps in knowledge and create customized interventions. A low-pressure environment, frequent check-ins creates a responsive, and an accommodative environment. Double this with technology based tools – like forms, quizzing presentations makes it fun, easier to track and also revisit.
Agile assessment creates a path for a more supportive and effective learning environment in schools. In summary,
- Agile approaches help in better designed assessments
- Continuous evaluation and adapting exams based on ongoing feedback ensures equity
- Reduces stress and increases learner engagement through Agile processes for exams
Our next, final blog will showcase how schools could overcome challenges and find success with Agile. We will also summarize the series and key takeaways. Share your insights and feedback to achyuth@beacon4minds.com / achyuth.coach@gmail.com
